I would like to highlight here Japan's succession to the International Criminal Court*1 in 2007 and your appointment , Mr. Saiga*2, as Judge to this court. And these facts underline the Japan's full commitment to international law, to universal protection of human rights, and to ending potential impunity for severe human rights violations.

Mr. President, my delegation would like to raise two questions with Japan and to make two recommendations.

Like other delegations, my delegation would appreciate to be informed on how Japan will respond to the recommendations made by the international community and the various human rights mechanisms with regard to Japan's military sexual slavery practices during the Second World War, also known as practice of comfort women.

韓国(Republic of Korea)の発言より「慰安婦」に関する部分

Mr. President, taking this opportunity, we would touch upon three issues.

Firstly, the U.N. human mechanisms including the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, the Committee on Violence against Women, the Committee on the Elimination and Discrimination against Women, and the Committee against Torture have addressed their concerns over the issue of comfort women during the Second World War. They consider that this matter has not been adequately addressed by the Japanese Government, and have according them made recommendations to Japan on this matter.

We call on the Japanese Government to respond sincerely to the recommendations of the U.N. human rights mechanisms, and request the Japan delegation to elaborate on the current of implementation of the recommendations as well as their plans for future action in this regard.
